Idaho Car Insurance Requirements
Minimum Liability Limits
To legally operate a motor vehicle in the state of Idaho you must carry at least a minimum amount of liability coverage. Idaho car insurance requirements state that you must have at least what is known as a 25/50/15 plan. This means that you must carry at least $25,000 worth of bodily injury liability coverage for one person, $50,000 in bodily injury liability coverage for more than one person, and $15,000 in property damage liability coverage.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage Minimums
On July 24, 2008 a new law went into effect and as of January 1, 2009 Idaho car insurance requirements state that every auto liability insurance policy include uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage unless a named insured has rejected these coverages in writing. What this means is that although you must have the 25/50/15 plan discussed above you do not necessarily need to carry additional UM or UIM coverage but if you do not wish to carry the additional coverage you must reject it in writing.
Proof of Insurance
In addition to carrying the minimum amount of liability coverage, Idaho car insurance requirements also state that you be able to produce proof of financial responsibility. If you're pulled over by a police officer or if you are involved in an accident you must be able to provide proof of insurance so keeping your insurance card in your vehicle at all times is a good idea.
