Kentucky Car Insurance RequirementsThe Minimum Allowed by Law

Kentucky car insurance requirements state that anyone operating a motor vehicle in the state of Kentucky have a least a minimum amount of auto insurance. One thing that is a bit different in Kentucky is that it is known as a choice no fault state. Most states follow either a no-fault system where your insurance provider will pay for your claims regardless of who is at fault in an accident or a tort system where someone must be found to be at fault and their insurance company will pay the damages of the innocent party. Kentucky gives you the option to either accept or reject the no-fault system but all drivers must maintain at least a minimum amount of liability coverage.

Kentucky car insurance requirements state that all drivers must have liability coverage and the minimum amount of coverage is known as a 25/50/10 coverage plan. What those numbers mean is that you will need to have at least $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person and up to $50,000 per accident as well as a minimum of $10,000 in property damage liability coverage.

The No-Fault Option

If you choose to follow the no-fault system you'll also need to carry at least $10,000 in PIP coverage or personal injury protection. PIP coverage will pay your damages to the amount specified in your policy regardless of who is at fault or an accident. If you choose the no-fault system you will give up some of your rights to sue if you sustain injuries in an accident where someone else is at fault. Although you can choose to either accept or reject the no-fault system Kentucky car insurance requirements state that all drivers must have at least the minimum amounts of liability discussed above (the 25/50/10 coverage).
