Nevada Car Insurance Requirements
All drivers must comply with Nevada car insurance requirements in order to legally operate a vehicle in the state. The minimum amount of compulsory coverage that a motorist is allowed to carry is known as a 15/30/10 plan. You must carry at least $15,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person and $30,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per accident to more than one person was injured. You must also carry at least $10,000 in property damage liability coverage. That is the absolute minimum allowed by Nevada state law but many drivers feel the need to carry additional coverage.
Additional Coverage
It is very easy these days for someone's medical bills to exceed $15,000 if they are injured in an accident and it is also quite easy for property damage to exceed $10,000. Because of this, it may be wise to carry a greater amount of liability coverage than the minimum amount under Nevada car insurance requirements. It's also important to keep in mind that liability coverage only pays damages to the other party involved if you are at fault in an accident and it will not cover any of your medical bills or property damage.
If you wish to have your damages covered regardless of who is at fault in an accident you would want to look into getting comprehensive and collision coverage. This type of coverage is not required by Nevada state law but it would certainly be a good idea if you drive a newer or more expensive vehicle.
Tort System
Nevada follows a tort system which means that whenever an accident occurs, someone must be found to be at fault for causing the accident. It is this person and/or their insurance provider who would be financially responsible for paying damages.
Proof of Insurance
To be in compliance with Nevada auto insurance requirements you must also carry proof of insurance. If you are involved in an accident or if you are stopped for a traffic violation you must be able to provide proof of insurance. Failure to do so can result in a $250 fine and you may even have your registration and driver's license revoked.
